The brief constrains your plant and hardscape choices, and exceeding expectations on style match scores higher than simply maxing out the budget on expensive plants.

Select Plants by Compatibility and Aesthetic

Browse a nursery catalog organized by plant type (trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, groundcovers) with filters for sun tolerance, water needs, bloom color, and mature size. Plants placed too close together compete and decline; plants with complementary water and sun needs grouped together thrive and boost design scores.

Place Hardscapes and Structures

Patios, pathways, retaining walls, pergolas, water features, and lighting fixtures occupy the structural layer. Hardscape placement affects foot-traffic flow, focal-point creation, and plant visibility. A well-placed bench framing a showpiece Japanese maple scores higher than a bench randomly dropped in a corner.

Balance Budget, Aesthetics, and Ecology

Three scoring dimensions — budget efficiency, aesthetic cohesion, and ecological compatibility — sometimes conflict. A stunning tropical plant that needs daily watering in a drought-tolerant xeriscape design might boost aesthetics while tanking ecology. The best designers find plants that satisfy all three scoring dimensions simultaneously.

Submit completed gardens to themed competitions. Community members vote on submissions blindly (no designer name visible), and top-ranked designs earn exclusive rewards. Browsing the competition gallery doubles as an inspiration board — top-ranked designers often pioneer plant combinations and layout tricks that filter into the broader community meta.
